Kuniyoshi Abumi

Dr. Kuniyoshi Abumi is a leading Japanese spine surgeon recognized worldwide for his pioneering work in spinal biomechanics and reconstructive techniques of the cervical spine. After graduating from Hokkaido University in 1977, he pursued advanced training and later conducted post-doctoral research on spinal biomechanics at Yale University’s Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation.

He went on to build a distinguished academic career at Hokkaido University, where he served as professor in the Graduate School of Medicine until his retirement, and he now holds the title of Professor Emeritus. Currently, he serves as CEO of the Center for Spinal Disorders at Sapporo Orthopaedic Hospital, where he continues to advance surgical practice and mentor younger surgeons.

Over the course of his career, Dr. Abumi has published nearly 200 scientific articles that have shaped modern spinal surgery. Among his most influential contributions is the development of transpedicular screw fixation techniques for the cervical spine, first reported in the 1990s and now widely adopted across the world. His expertise extends across spinal instrumentation, surgical techniques, management of complications, and long-term outcome studies.

Deeply committed to education, Dr. Abumi has also contributed to surgical training resources, including video libraries that demonstrate complex procedures such as occipitocervical fusion. His work has left a lasting impact on both clinical practice and academic research, establishing him as one of the most respected figures in spine surgery globally.
