Prof. Myung-Sang Moon

Professor Myung-Sang Moon was born on 24 January 1931 in Pusan, Korea. He joined the Seoul National University and graduated M. D. in 1957. He was awarded M. S. and Ph. D. in 1964 and 1967 respectively by the same university.

From March 1957, he trained in the General and Orthopedic Surgery field with Medical Corps, Armed Forces of Republic of Korea for six years. Following that, he continued his clinical training at Seoul National University Hospital from April 1963 to February 1968. Between January and December 1960, he extended his orthopedic clinical training at the 121st USA Army Evacuation Hospital. Besides holding a diploma in orthopedic surgery, Prof Moon is licensed to practice rehabilitation medicine.

During his final term of training, he taught at the School of Medicine of the Seoul National University, and upon the completion of his training, he served as an instructor in the same institution until May 1969. He held a professorship in Orthopaedic and acted as the Head of Orthopaedic Department at the Pusan National University from June 1969 to December 1970. His professorship career continued in Catholic University of Korea, where he was also the Chair Professor, between January 1971 and February 1996. In March 1996, he was awarded the honor of Professor Emeritus by the Catholic University of Korea, Seoul.

Some of his professional appointments include the Honorary President of Dongshin General Hospital, Seoul (November 1996 - December 2000); Senior Consultant and Vice-President of Sun General Hospital, Daejeon (March 2001 - April 2009); and Senior Consultant of Cheju Halla General Hospital, Jeju (May 2009 - present).

Prof Moon has been an active member in various national and international associations and societies. He had steered the leadership of the Korean Orthopedic Association, Korean Society of Spine Surgery, Korean Society of Knee Surgery, Korean Society of Hip Surgery, Korean Foot and Ankle Society, Korean College of Rheumatology, Korean Bone Metabolism Association and Korean Society of Biomechanics. In the region of Asia Pacific, he had served as the President of Asia Pacific Spine Society (known as the Spine Section of Western Pacific Orthopaedic Association) (1991-1993); Asia-Pacific Orthopaedic Association (2004-2007); International Society of Musculoskeletal Infection; and International Society of Soft Lumbar Stabilization. He was also nominated as the Honorary Patron of Neurospine Surgeon’s Association of India.

He has contributed greatly to the academic development of orthopedics and spine with more than 600 articles to professional journals and chapters to books throughout his career. He is part of the Editorial Board of multiple international journals such as Spine, Journal of Clinical Biomechanics, Journal of Orthopedic Surgery, Journal of Musculoskeletal Research, Journal of Indian Orthopedics, Journal of Neurology India, Journal of Spinal Surgery and Journal of Orthopedics and Trauma (former Current Orthopedics: UK). Formerly, he was an editorial board member of International Orthopedics (SICOT) and European Spine Journal.
